About Us

ATEC Rail Group (ARG) is an Australian-based below-rail infrastructure company. We develop and manage open access freight railway for the nation’s bulk commodity industries. ARG is rail accredited in Queensland.

At ARG we work with some of Australia’s largest bulk commodity clients to deliver customised freight infrastructure solutions, which optimise the effectiveness of the pit-to-port supply chain.

Our unique business model is designed to create economic value for our clients through the financing, the delivery and the procurement of critical rail freight infrastructure. And we do this in a number of ways:

  • We have an innovative access costing model, which accommodates multiple users
  • We can develop infrastructure sized to the client’s demand
  • We take an integrated approach to the logistics chain
  • We tailor bankable commercial agreements
  • And we have access to project funding to own the rail infrastructure.

Our unique business model facilitates privately-funded new rail infrastructure (greenfield) or upgrades to existing rail infrastructure (brownfield) projects that deliver critical freight infrastructure, without the need for government funding for their planning, development or ongoing operations.

ARG currently has more than AUD$2bn in rail development projects in its pipeline across Australia, and is actively investigating a number of additional opportunities in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.

We are the largest investor in freight rail infrastructure in Queensland’s Surat Basin. And despite the impact global market conditions are having on new development projects in Australia, ARG continues to invest in the Surat Basin precinct.

The construction and delivery of freight rail projects under ARG’s unique business model, where we use our own capital, are critical in supporting the continued growth of Australia’s largest export industry.

At ARG, we take seriously our ability to contribute to the nation’s debate on the capability of private companies to develop rail infrastructure across Australia. Our basic premise is that private companies like ours can bring value to bulk commodities by developing, at minimal cost to the Government, demand driven rail infrastructure.

In our view, there are 3 themes that are essential when developing an efficient freight rail network to transport Australia’s bulk commodities from regional mines to coastal ports for export. Australia needs:

  1. Integrated policy, planning and project development frameworks
  2. Timely and effective decision-making by all levels of Government
  3. Successful interaction between Government and the private sector to facilitate commercially bankable arrangements for privately-funded rail infrastructure

At ARG we actively contribute to State and Federal policy development, which gives us a share-of-voice in the political arena. Actively engaging in the national debate about freight rail infrastructure is critical in supporting our business as we grow.
